Tanzania: Tanzania Orders Thorough Inspection of Roads and Bridges Heading to El Niño Rains

Tanzania has ordered an immediate, nationwide inspection of roads and bridges as the country prepares for expected heavy El Niño rains, according to Daily News via AllAfrica. The directive was announced in Dodoma and reinforced during a government tour of infrastructure readiness in the Coast Region. Works Minister Abdallah Ulega said the move follows instructions from President Samia Suluhu Hassan for officials to take steps to limit damage from the coming weather.

The Ministry of Works told the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to check vulnerable sections and act quickly where repairs are needed so travel and freight can continue with fewer disruptions. Ulega also called for weekly assessments in all regions, saying preparedness requires both equipment and trained personnel ready to respond if flooding or washouts occur.

TANROADS said it has started organizing emergency supplies and positioning them around the country. Coast Region is being used as a coordination center for preparedness and response, and the agency said it has 5,638 metres of steel culverts available for deployment. The announcement highlights the government’s effort to reduce the risk of transport breakdowns and other infrastructure damage during the rainy season, which can affect movement of people and goods across Tanzania.
