Tanzania: Tanzania Connects Power to Million Households With Dar and Coast Regions Using Over 800 Megawatts

What the report says
Tanzania’s authorities say electricity connections have now reached more than one million households nationwide, according to a report published by Daily News and distributed by AllAfrica. The update was presented in Dar es Salaam, with Dar es Salaam and Pwani among the regions using the most power, at about 800 megawatts.
The report says Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila made the remarks during the signing and launch of an Electricity Connection Financing Scheme involving the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) and CRDB Bank at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre. He linked the city’s rising electricity demand to population growth, migration from other parts of the country and broader economic activity.
According to the article, the expansion of banking and lending services is also helping households and businesses invest in electricity-dependent activities such as small industries and entrepreneurship. Chalamila also praised President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government for what he described as major investment in power infrastructure in Dar es Salaam, saying more than 800bn/- had been allocated for improvements.
The development matters because access to reliable electricity is central to urban growth, business activity and public services. The report presents the financing scheme and infrastructure spending as part of wider efforts to reduce outages and support livelihoods, although it does not provide a timeline for when the full benefits will be felt.
