Tanzania's VP expelled from ruling party for indiscipline and his successor named

Tanzania’s ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party has expelled Emmanuel Nchimbi, the country’s vice-president, for what it called indiscipline after he resigned from the post earlier this week. BBC Africa reported that the 54-year-old’s departure came after a period of apparent tension with President Samia Suluhu Hassan, including remarks in which he urged Tanzanians to push for a new constitution.

The decision was taken at an extraordinary CCM meeting chaired by President Samia. The party did not publicly set out the specific allegations behind the expulsion. Nchimbi, who was Samia’s running mate in last October’s disputed election, had said in a resignation letter posted on Instagram that he believed the president wanted changes and that he would step away from public life. His resignation is due to take effect at the end of next week.

Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi has been nominated to replace him, and his name will go to parliament for approval. If confirmed, he would take up a role that has drawn attention because Nchimbi is the first Tanzanian vice-president known to have stepped down. The development comes against the backdrop of the 2024 election, which was boycotted by the main opposition party Chadema and followed by deadly unrest, highlighting continuing political strains in Tanzania.
