Tanzania’s avocado exports surpass 2030 target, with China among key markets

What the report says
Tanzania’s avocado exports have climbed sharply, with the Cereals and Other Produce Regulatory Authority (COPRA) saying shipments to overseas markets, including China, reached 52,000 tonnes in the 2025/2026 season. That total exceeded the country’s 2030 export target of 40,000 tonnes, according to the report carried by The Independent Uganda and sourced to Xinhua.
COPRA said export volumes were up substantially from 15,432.77 tonnes in the 2020/2021 season. The article also said foreign exchange earnings from avocado exports rose to 97.2 million U.S. dollars from 44.2 million dollars over the same period, while national production increased from 149,340 tonnes to 203,473 tonnes. The figures point to a rapid expansion in Tanzania’s avocado industry.
Agriculture Minister Daniel Chongolo highlighted the sector’s growing role in jobs, investment, farmers’ incomes and foreign exchange at the third National Avocado Stakeholders Conference in Dodoma. He said growth has been supported by cooperation between government and private companies, including work on production, market access, infrastructure and trading systems.
The report said Tanzania now exports avocados to China, the Netherlands, India, the United Arab Emirates, France and South Africa. It also noted government measures such as seedling distribution, planned new seedlings for next season, and funding for collection centers, alongside COPRA’s plans to improve storage, formalize trading and encourage more private investment in processing.
