Tanzania: 400-KV Chalinze-Dodoma Power Project Nears Completion Before Starting Services in Mid-August

AllAfrica, carrying a Tanzania Daily News report from Dar es Salaam, says Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has put the 400-kilovolt Chalinze-Dodoma transmission line at 94% completion. The utility said the project is in its final stage and is targeted for completion by August 21, 2026.

According to the report, TANESCO Acting Director of Communications and Customer Service Irene Gowelle told journalists on July 28 that temporary electricity interruptions will be needed to finish the remaining work safely. The outages are planned in two windows: July 30 to August 4 and August 11 to 17, 2026. She said the contractor, TBEA, requested the interruptions to allow construction activities to proceed under safe conditions.

The reported affected areas include parts of Tanzania’s Central, Lake, Northern, Western and South-Western zones, with outages expected to vary by location and schedule. Gowelle said TANESCO would keep customers informed through media, social platforms and other channels so households and businesses can plan around the published power-interruption timetable.

Project manager Engineer Newton Mwakifwamba was cited as saying the line stretches 345 kilometres and is valued at about 514bn Tanzanian shillings, with full financing from the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania. The project matters because high-voltage transmission lines are central to moving electricity across regions; TANESCO says this one is intended to reinforce the national grid, improve reliability and help meet rising power demand.
