Takeover collapse took wind out of Derby's sails

What the report says
Derby County owner David Clowes remains committed to funding the club’s push for Premier League promotion after a takeover bid collapsed late in the summer, according to Rams chief executive Stephen Pearce in comments reported by BBC Sport Football. Clowes, who saved Derby from administration in 2022, had been close to selling the Championship club to Saudi Arabia government official Turki Al-Sheikh in August, with the deal reportedly having cleared both the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League before Al-Sheikh withdrew.
Pearce said the process left Derby in a holding pattern for much of the transfer window and described the failed sale as a sudden setback. He said the club had expected the deal to complete, but instead had to quickly regroup and continue with its recruitment plans. Despite the uncertainty, Derby pressed ahead with signings while the takeover was being considered.
BBC Sport reported that Clowes personally backed several summer deals, including permanent or loan-to-buy moves for Bobby Clark, Sam Szmodics, Alex Mowatt and David Ozoh, along with other free transfers and loans. Pearce said Clowes kept investing even though he may not have recovered that money if the sale had gone through. Clowes later took the club off the market and continued supporting the squad.
The article said the episode underscores both the financial challenge of building a promotion push and the importance of ownership stability for clubs trying to strengthen during a brief transfer window.
