What the report says

Switzerland’s broadcasting complaints authority has ruled that commentary aired on French-language public broadcaster RTS during the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics breached anti-discrimination rules. The case centered on a February 16 broadcast about Israel’s bobsleigh team, with commentator Stefan Reina focusing on pilot Adam Jeremy Edelman’s political views and social media posts while the race was underway.

According to the Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television, a nine-member panel voted 5-4 to uphold four public complaints. The watchdog said the remarks appeared to have been prepared in advance and went beyond sports analysis, effectively suggesting that Edelman should be excluded from the Games because of his views. The authority concluded that this amounted to unequal treatment and a stigmatizing message directed at the athlete.

Al Jazeera reported that Reina described Edelman as a “Zionist,” criticized his stance on Gaza, and questioned his eligibility under Olympic rules. Edelman called the segment a “diatribe,” while Israel’s embassy in Switzerland said it was appalled and wanted a public apology. RTS later removed the clip from its website.

The decision matters because it highlights how broadcasters in Switzerland are expected to balance free commentary with rules on appropriateness, diversity and protection from discrimination. The ICA said it would publish the full written reasoning later, and any appeal can go to Switzerland’s Federal Supreme Court.
