What the report says

Swedish police have identified the person killed in Friday’s sword attack at Brinell School in Fagersta as a 17-year-old girl. Police said her family had been informed, while local reporting cited her parents confirming her death. The attack, which took place shortly after the school reopened from summer break, has shaken the local community and drawn national attention.

According to the report, the main suspect is an 18-year-old student at the school who was arrested at the scene. Prosecutors have ordered the suspect held on suspicion of murder and multiple attempted murders. Two boys, aged 12 and 17, were seriously injured, and a third victim was treated for minor injuries and has since returned home.

By Saturday, residents had begun leaving candles and flowers outside the school, and both Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited Fagersta to pay their respects. Political parties also paused campaigning ahead of Sweden’s September election. Police are investigating possible online ties linked to school violence, including social media material that appeared shortly before the attack, though authorities have not publicly detailed the evidence.

The case comes amid wider concern in Sweden over school violence, following last year’s deadly shooting in Orebro and an earlier 2015 sword attack in Trollhattan.
