Time+Tide Watches reported that Omega and Swatch have introduced a new ultra-limited MoonSwatch, the Mission to the Moon 1969, and are using an online application system rather than a standard store queue to decide who can buy it. The bioceramic model is limited to 1,969 pieces and includes Omega’s 18k Moonshine gold, with gold reclaimed from older Omega components dating to the 1960s, according to the article.

The launch uses what Swatch calls the Electronic Swatch Timepiece Application, or ESTA, on the Swatch website. Applicants face 32 questions, mixing factual prompts about Omega, Swatch and Apollo history with more open-ended answers. Time+Tide said the process gives users 2 hours and 15 minutes, matching the time Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent on the lunar surface in 1969. Selected applicants are expected to be allowed to purchase online and collect from a chosen Swatch store.

The outlet framed the change as a response to problems around recent hype-watch releases, including the Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Pop, where first-come, first-served store launches reportedly drew long queues, store closures and tensions. Time+Tide also noted Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek had recently defended in-person launch culture while hinting at a more provocative new approach.

Early use of the ESTA system appeared difficult, with Time+Tide reporting heavy traffic, website crashes and incomplete applications after the portal opened on July 16 at 3:32 p.m. CEST. The article said applications were due by July 21 at 11:59 p.m. CEST, leaving open whether the system can reduce bot activity, flipping and safety concerns.
