Swatch’s MoonSwatch ESTA could change hype watch launches forever - Time+Tide Watches

Time+Tide Watches reports that Omega and Swatch have introduced a new limited MoonSwatch release, the Mission to the Moon 1969, and are using an online application process rather than the usual first-come, first-served store launch. The watch is limited to 1,969 pieces, uses bioceramic construction with Omega 18k Moonshine gold, and includes reclaimed gold from 1960s Omega components, according to the publisher.

The new allocation system is called ESTA, short for “Electronic Swatch Timepiece Application.” Time+Tide says applicants must answer 32 questions on the Swatch website, mixing factual prompts about Omega, Swatch and Apollo history with more playful or open-ended responses. Once submitted, Swatch says an internal jury will review applications; selected buyers can purchase online and collect the watch at a chosen Swatch store. Applications reportedly opened July 16 at 3:32 p.m. CEST and were due by July 21 at 11:59 p.m. CEST.

The shift follows criticism of recent Swatch collaboration launches, particularly the Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Pop, which Time+Tide says drew long queues, store closures and reported disorder at some locations. Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek had recently defended in-person launches as communal experiences while hinting at a more provocative new approach.

Time+Tide frames ESTA as a potential attempt to reduce unsafe crowding and limit flippers, while noting that online systems can still be vulnerable to bots or technical workarounds. The publisher also reports that heavy traffic made the ESTA site difficult to access, raising questions about whether the new method can fairly handle the demand that MoonSwatch releases continue to generate.
