Swansea sign Ghana winger Opoku

BBC Africa reported that Swansea City have signed Ghana winger Joseph Opoku from Belgian club Zulte Waregem. The 20-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with the Championship side, with Swansea holding an option to add a further year. The move was announced on 23 July 2026, with Opoku already linking up with the squad during the club’s pre-season trip to Austria.

Opoku moved to Zulte Waregem in 2024 and was part of the team that earned promotion to Belgium’s Pro League. According to the BBC report, his strongest senior campaign came last season, when he recorded 10 goals and six assists. He also made his senior Ghana debut in a May friendly against Mexico and was included in Ghana’s preliminary World Cup squad before missing out on final selection.

Swansea head coach Vitor Matos described Opoku as a quick, sharp young player with significant senior experience in Belgium, and said the club believes he can handle the physical demands and busy schedule of the Championship. Sporting director Ben Stevens also pointed to Opoku’s Belgian top-flight experience and Ghana national-team involvement as signs of his potential.

The signing continues Swansea’s summer recruitment under Matos. Opoku is listed as the club’s fifth addition of the window, following Elijah Just, Stephen Welsh, Moussa Yeo and Leo Walta. The move matters for Swansea as they add another wide attacking option ahead of the new Championship season, while Opoku gets an opportunity to develop in one of Europe’s most competitive second-tier leagues.
