KSL.com reported that Southern Utah University identified 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, as a current student and ROTC graduate who was killed while serving in Jordan. The university said Monday that Feehan, from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, was enrolled in its MBA program and was only weeks away from finishing; SUU plans to award the degree posthumously.

According to KSL, U.S. Central Command announced Saturday that Feehan and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, died in Jordan while supporting a U.S. mission against the Islamic State group. SUU said Feehan was commissioned in spring 2024 as an Army Air Defense Artillery officer through its Army ROTC program and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The university also said Feehan previously served with the 2nd Battalion, 222nd Field Artillery, Utah Army National Guard, in Cedar City while attending SUU. SUU President Mindy Benson expressed condolences to Feehan’s family, classmates and fellow service members, and the school plans to honor him during its Pioneer Legacy Celebration. KSL reported that SUU’s Carter Carillon will be decorated with yellow ribbons and play “The Army Song” hourly.

KSL also noted reactions from Utah leaders, including Gov. Spencer Cox and Sens. Mike Lee and John Curtis, who posted tributes on X. The report places Feehan’s death amid heightened U.S. military action involving Iran, with Curtis saying Congress should address authorization for military operations.
