‘Super Lady’ Muwonge thrills on international debut in Rwanda

The Observer reported that Ugandan rally driver Susan “Super Lady” Muwonge made a strong first appearance in international competition at the 2026 Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally in Kigali, returning on July 13 with a podium result in her class. Muwonge, a two-time Uganda National Rally champion, was classified as Best Woman Driver, finished second in the ARC2 category and placed ninth overall in the African Rally Championship standings.

According to the report, Muwonge was co-driven by Ugandan navigator Musa Nsubuga and started the event competitively, ending the opening day inside the top five overall. Her challenge was slowed on the William Louw stage when a puncture cost the crew time and positions. Despite that setback, they recovered enough to secure an ARC2 podium and a top-10 finish, a notable outcome for Muwonge’s first rally outside Uganda.

The Observer said Muwonge also highlighted the reception she received from Rwandan supporters and described the experience as important for her growth as a driver. The report added that, because she missed the first two ARC rounds in Kenya and Uganda, she is not in contention for the 2026 ARC2 title, but she is now looking toward the final round in Tanzania scheduled for October 2-4.

Other Ugandan crews also featured in Rwanda. Oscar Ntambi and Pius Luggya reportedly finished eighth overall and second in ARC2, while Odeon Niwagaba and Ibrahim Lubega placed second and third in the two-wheel-drive category behind Kenya’s Hinga Michuki. Kenya’s Karan Patel won the Mountain Gorilla Rally, maintaining his unbeaten run through three ARC rounds.
