Sunderland defender Seelt joins Swansea on loan

Swansea City have added Sunderland defender Jenson Seelt on loan for the rest of the season, BBC Sport Football reports. The 23-year-old Dutch centre-back moves to South Wales after joining Sunderland from PSV Eindhoven in 2023 and making 21 appearances for the club. He also spent part of last season on loan at Wolfsburg in Germany.

The deal gives Swansea extra cover in central defence as they manage a number of injury and squad issues. Club captain Ben Cabango’s heel problem is not thought to be serious, but another defender, Cameron Burgess, is expected to miss a long spell with an Achilles injury. Head coach Vitor Matos said Seelt should add depth, physical presence and composure in possession.

BBC Sport noted that Swansea may still look to strengthen further at centre-back before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline. Seelt can also be in contention for the Championship match at Derby County on Saturday, alongside other defensive options such as Stephen Welsh and Filip Lissah. Separately, Swansea have also completed a permanent move for Stephen Eustaquio from Porto.

More broadly, the signing fits a common late-window pattern for clubs trying to balance immediate injury cover with longer-term squad planning, especially in the Championship where fixture demands can be heavy.
