Sudan: Sudan Renews Call for UN Security Council to Designate RSF Militia As a Terrorist Organization

Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Al-Harith Idris, has again urged the UN Security Council to classify the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as a terrorist organization, according to the Sudan News Agency report carried by AllAfrica. He made the appeal in remarks to the Council in New York on Monday evening, arguing that the group’s campaign has shifted after losing territory, including Khartoum in March 2025, the road linking Omdurman and El-Obeid in July 2026, and positions in West Darfur in early August 2026.

Idris said the RSF has relied more heavily on long-range drone attacks rather than direct fighting. He described these strikes as aimed at civilians and at making life unworkable in areas beyond RSF control. The report said he cited drone attacks in Kordofan that have killed more than 1,000 people since the start of 2026, as well as repeated assaults on humanitarian convoys, roads used by aid trucks and fuel tankers, and displaced people fleeing fighting.

The envoy also referred to a major drone attack on August 12 that hit several cities, including Khartoum, El-Obeid, Atbara and Damazin, and disrupted electricity in Khartoum Bahri. He also mentioned earlier attacks on Port Sudan, Khartoum International Airport, a power station in Blue Nile State and a UN logistics base in Kadugli, where six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed. The broader significance is that Sudan is seeking stronger international action amid a conflict that has increasingly affected civilians, aid operations and critical infrastructure.
