Sudan: Sudan - Abdelwahid Rejects El Burhan's Dialogue As Eastern Civil Forces Back Anti-War Plan

The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdelwahid El Nur has again rejected the dialogue initiative proposed by Sudan’s Sovereignty Council chair, Abdelfattah El Burhan, according to Dabanga’s report distributed by AllAfrica. A delegation from the movement met Pekka Haavisto, the UN secretary-general’s personal envoy, in Nairobi and said it viewed Burhan’s proposal as an attempt to seek legitimacy for the current military-backed authorities. The movement said any meaningful political process should come only after the war ends and should exclude the National Congress Party, the Islamic Movement and affiliated groups that refuse such a process.

At the same meeting, the delegation said it welcomed the international Quad’s approach, describing it as a useful framework for addressing Sudan’s crisis, while voicing concerns about the performance of the Quintet. The report says representatives of Sudanese forces that signed the Declaration of Principles had sent a letter to the Quintet outlining those concerns and suggesting changes.

The article also says the Alliance of Civil Forces for Eastern Sudan backed the “Peace We Want” document and endorsed the Quad principles, including preserving Sudan’s unity, ending the war, relieving the humanitarian emergency and placing civilians in charge of the political process. The alliance called for pressure on the warring sides and sanctions on figures it says are obstructing peace, including a network linked to Ali Karti.
