Sudan: Southern Port Receives 45 Vessels in August and Handles More Than 24,000 Containers

Sudan’s Southern Port handled a busy month in August 2026, according to the Sudan News Agency report distributed by AllAfrica. The container terminal received 45 vessels in total, split between 23 container ships and 22 general cargo vessels, reflecting steady movement through one of the country’s key maritime gateways.

The report says the terminal processed 24,898 containers during the month, equal to about 76,833 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs. Inbound traffic accounted for 14,372 containers, including 11,960 containers bound for Sudan and 2,412 transshipment containers. Export traffic totaled 10,526 containers, with 8,433 export containers headed for Sudan and 2,093 transshipment containers.

The figures indicate that most inbound and outbound cargo was tied to Sudan’s domestic trade, while a smaller share moved through the port as transshipment. The report also noted that the work included full, empty and transshipment containers, suggesting a mixed operational profile at the terminal.

According to the Sudanese Sea Ports Corporation’s stated aims in the report, this activity is part of efforts to keep foreign trade moving smoothly and improve efficiency at the Southern Port. More broadly, port throughput is often watched as a practical indicator of trade flow and logistics capacity, especially in countries dependent on maritime shipping.
