Sudan: RSF-Aligned Govt Accuses Sudan Army of 'Chemical Weapons Attack in North Kordofan'

What the report says

AllAfrica, carrying a Dabanga report dated 21 July 2026, says the Rapid Support Forces-aligned Sudan Founding Alliance, known as Tasees, accused the Sudanese Armed Forces of using banned chemical weapons in an air strike on Umm Garfa in North Kordofan. Tasees spokesperson Ahmed Tagad Lisan said the bombardment occurred on Saturday and hit Umm Garfa and nearby villages, leaving 10 civilians dead and 18 wounded.

According to Dabanga, Tasees said those killed included women, children, elderly men and shepherds, and alleged that civilian gathering points, water sources and livestock were targeted. The Sudan Liberation Movement-Democratic Council further claimed that an SAF Antonov aircraft dropped barrel bombs producing yellow smoke, prompting concern about possible chlorine gas. Dabanga reported it could not independently verify those allegations, and said it had not received an immediate response from the Sudanese army.

The report also cited the Dar Hammar Emergency Room as saying SAF aircraft and drones destroyed 14 RSF combat vehicles in North Kordofan on the same day, adding a separate battlefield account near the reported strike area. Tasees information minister Khaled Ahmed Dana called for an Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons investigation into the alleged attack.

The accusations come as a second phase of US sanctions against Sudan took effect after Washington said Sudan’s government had used chemical weapons. Sudan’s Foreign Ministry rejected the sanctions as politically driven and based on false claims, while saying it remains committed to the Chemical Weapons Convention and willing to cooperate through recognised OPCW verification procedures. Dabanga also reported that a Sudanese government committee recently told an OPCW meeting in The Hague it found no evidence of chemical weapons use.
