Sudan: Quintet Makes First Sudan Visit for Political Talks

International members of the Quintet initiative are set to travel to Khartoum for their first visit to Sudan, according to Dabanga via AllAfrica. The group includes the African Union, the United Nations, IGAD, the League of Arab States and the European Union. The visit is scheduled to last three days, from Tuesday through Thursday, and is intended to support efforts toward peace and a civilian-led political process in Sudan.

Dabanga reported that the Quintet plans direct consultations with Sudanese parties to discuss the conflict, hear their views on the current situation and review what the group has done so far. The initiative said it has already been engaging with Sudanese political and civilian actors in recent months as part of a broader push for an inclusive process leading to a democratic civilian government.

The report also said the Quintet is coordinating with the Quad — the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates — along with other international partners. In a related development, UN envoy Pekka Haavisto had already arrived in Khartoum and met several Sudanese officials and armed-group leaders. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Haavisto would join the Quintet for meetings on the political situation and recent proposals for Sudanese-led dialogue. The talks matter because they reflect continued international efforts to encourage negotiations and reduce violence in a country still facing war and political uncertainty.
