AllAfrica, carrying a Dabanga report dated 22 July 2026, says displacement camp leaders in Sudan’s Darfur region are warning that hunger, disease and a lack of basic services are worsening sharply as the war continues. Yagoub Furi, general coordinator of the General Coordination of Camps for the Displaced and Refugees in Darfur, told Radio Dabanga that North Darfur camps, except Tawila, have no food aid, with Fata Borno, Kutum and Kassab singled out. A UN spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, also cited an assessment finding food as the top need for about 236,000 displaced people in five West Jebel Marra locations.

According to the report, camp representatives said aid reaching West, South, Central and East Darfur covers only a small share of needs and may sustain families for roughly 10 days a month. In Hamidiya camp in Zalingei, local officials described food vouchers as inadequate amid steep market prices and no reliable income. Women searching outside camps for food or work were reported to face theft, assault and sexual violence.

The article also reports severe water and health pressures. Furi said many residents depend on unsafe seasonal streams or walk long distances for water, while broken pumps and delayed rains compound risks. Adam Regal, spokesperson for the Darfur Coordination for the Displaced and Refugees, warned of infectious disease outbreaks, including malaria, measles, acute diarrhoea and cholera, alongside medicine shortages and rising malnutrition. Hamidiya officials said only one of five health centres is fully functioning for about 67,000 people.

Dabanga reported that humanitarian agencies have reduced operations because of funding gaps, while communications failures have further isolated communities. Camp leaders appealed for urgent food, medical, shelter and protection support, and called for women and young people to be included in relief efforts.
