Sudan: Human Rights Chief Türk Renews Call for End to Spiralling Sudan War

The UN Human Rights Council heard renewed warnings on Monday about Sudan’s widening war, as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for an immediate ceasefire, an end to outside involvement, and a return to civilian rule. The appeal came as the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces entered its fourth year and continued to drive a major humanitarian crisis.

According to the UN News report distributed by AllAfrica, the fighting has displaced more than six million people inside Sudan and forced another 4.5 million to seek refuge across borders. Türk and council-appointed investigators said civilians remain at acute risk in several areas, including Kordofan and parts of Darfur, where attacks on homes, markets, hospitals, fuel stations and other civilian sites have intensified.

The fact-finding mission said both sides have increasingly used long-range drones, with reported strikes reaching far beyond front lines. It also raised concern about alleged external support to RSF-linked fighters in parts of the UAE, Chad, southeastern Libya and Puntland in Somalia. The investigators said there were reasonable grounds to believe both SAF and RSF committed serious violations that may amount to war crimes.

The World Health Organization separately reported severe damage to major hospitals in Khartoum, underscoring the strain on Sudan’s health system. WHO said critical medical facilities have lost equipment and suffered structural damage, while staff continue operating in limited usable areas.
