What the report says

Sudan’s foreign minister, Mohi-Eddin Salem, welcomed a visit to Khartoum by an African Union delegation made up of ambassadors and members of the AU Peace and Security Council, describing it as a significant moment after what Sudanese officials called the capital’s liberation and the restoration of security. The remarks were reported by the Sudan News Agency and distributed by AllAfrica, with the minister speaking after a meeting in Khartoum on Sunday that brought together the prime minister, government members, and representatives of political and civil forces.

According to the report, Salem said the delegation was able to see the extent of destruction in the city following fighting with the Rapid Support Forces, which Sudanese authorities referred to as a militia. The meeting also included symbolic participation from some political groups, and a short documentary on alleged crimes and violations was shown, the article said.

For the African Union side, Algeria’s ambassador to the AU, Mohamed Khaled, said the bloc stood with Sudan and its people. He said the AU would support efforts to restore stability, protect Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, and uphold principles including sovereignty and non-interference. The visit comes against the backdrop of Sudan’s wider conflict and efforts by regional actors to engage with the country’s authorities.
