Sudan: Finance, Higher Education and Minerals Ministers Urge African Union to Take a Constructive Position On Militia Crimes

What the report says
Sudan’s finance, higher education and minerals ministers used a meeting in Khartoum with African Union ambassadors and members of the African Peace and Security Council to press the AU to take a more supportive stance toward Sudan, according to the Sudan News Agency report distributed by AllAfrica. The discussion took place at the Council of Ministers headquarters on Sunday, as the government presented its position on the war with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the broader regional response.
Finance Minister Gebreil Ibrahim said the conflict has weakened Sudan’s economy through killings, displacement and damage to infrastructure and basic services, including electricity facilities. He also argued that sanctions are not helping the public and urged the AU to revisit Sudan’s suspended membership. Higher Education Minister Ahmed Modawi Musa said the fighting has severely damaged universities and research institutions, with effects on students, professors and scientists. He framed the destruction as a setback not only for Sudan, but for African development more broadly.
Minerals Minister Nour Al-Daim Taha called on the AU to take a firmer line against outside involvement in Sudan’s war and specifically urged action over alleged support for the RSF. He welcomed the AU’s rejection of parallel governing structures and said Sudan’s position remains in favor of a peace settlement that reflects the interests of the Sudanese people. The statements highlight how Khartoum is seeking diplomatic backing as the war continues to disrupt state institutions, education and the economy.
