TVLine reports that HBO Max’s “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” a spin-off of “The Big Bang Theory,” used its July 23 premiere to bring back Kunal Nayyar as Rajesh Koothrappali — but not the same Raj viewers knew from the original sitcom. The episode introduces an alternate-universe Raj about 12 minutes in, reuniting him with Stuart Bloom, Denise and Bert Kibbler in a post-apocalyptic version of Caltech.

According to TVLine’s recap and interviews, the premiere centers on Stuart being told by “Stuart Prime” that multiple doomed realities can be avoided if he fixes a quantum interference device created by Leonard, Sheldon and Howard in the original universe. Raj, imprisoned by an alternate Barry Kripke, has worked out the solution, but Kripke shoots him before he can use it. The episode then moves Stuart, Bert and Kripke into another parallel world, while Denise is left behind.

Co-creators Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn told TVLine that Raj’s grim turn was driven by story mechanics rather than an effort to revise his original-series ending. Prady said the plot needed someone capable of doing the math and then being killed before applying it, making Raj a logical legacy character to use.
