Iran said a planned meeting with officials from Gulf states on the Strait of Hormuz has been postponed because of developments in Yemen, according to comments from Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei at a news conference on Monday. The session was expected to take place in Oman and was described by Baghaei as a chance to discuss how the waterway should be managed.

Baghaei said Oman and Iran had agreed to pursue what he called a responsible approach to the strait. He also said Saudi Arabia asked for the meeting to be delayed. In his remarks, he rejected any Iranian involvement in Yemen and said Tehran had no connection to the fighting there. The Strait of Hormuz, which lies in the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, remains a key shipping route for global energy supplies.

The report also said tensions in the wider region have risen, with Houthi forces expanding their control in Yemen and with attacks affecting shipping. Separately, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it destroyed an advanced MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz. Baghaei also said an Iranian commercial vessel was attacked on Sunday, killing one person and injuring two Pakistani crew members. The developments underscore how unrest around Yemen and the Gulf can affect maritime security and regional diplomacy.
