What the report says

A storm that hit Sembabule District around dawn damaged more than 20 homes, displaced residents and left some families worried about food shortages after hailstones and heavy rain destroyed crops in Kyeera and Mpumudde sub-counties, according to Nile Post. The weather also tore off the roof of Kyeera Police Station, adding to the disruption in an area where residents say they rely on the station for security and support.

The station’s Officer in Charge, ASP Luke Monday, said the building was left exposed and much of its property was damaged, forcing officers to look for another place to work. Community leaders said the loss could make it harder to tackle problems such as livestock theft, which residents described as a recurring concern.

Local residents appealed to government and district leaders for emergency help, including iron sheets to repair damaged roofs and relief for families whose gardens were destroyed. They said many households depend on the affected crops for both food and income, and that the damage may leave them vulnerable if more rain comes before repairs are made.

More broadly, the incident reflects the recurring impact of severe weather on rural communities in Uganda, where storms can damage housing, public infrastructure and subsistence farming at the same time. In this case, residents are calling for a damage assessment and quick assistance to restore basic services and help families recover.
