Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq recover as oil eases, new Trump tariffs take effect - Yahoo Finance
What the report says
Yahoo Finance reported that U.S. stocks ended a volatile Friday session mixed, as investors weighed new Trump administration tariffs, concerns about heavy artificial intelligence spending, oil-price moves and elevated bond yields. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained about 0.5%, and the S&P 500 finished slightly higher, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.6%. Despite the partial recovery, all three major indexes declined for the week, with the Nasdaq down about 2% over five sessions.
The market turbulence followed a sharp Thursday sell-off centered on large technology companies. Yahoo Finance said the group often called the “Magnificent Seven” lost nearly $800 billion in market value that day, with worries over rising AI-related spending contributing to the decline. Intel shares also dropped nearly 8% Friday even after the semiconductor company’s second-quarter results exceeded Wall Street expectations.
A new round of global tariffs on nearly all U.S. imports took effect overnight, according to the report. The measures, described as Section 301 tariffs, set rates of 10% to 12.5% on major U.S. trading partners. Yahoo Finance reported that the White House excluded some energy products as markets watched oil prices, which have implications for inflation and broader economic costs.
Oil offered some relief Friday, with Brent crude futures down 4% and trading below $96 a barrel, though the benchmark was still headed for a weekly increase after reaching $100. In economic data, S&P Global’s flash PMI showed U.S. business activity expanding in July at the quickest pace in eight months, helped by the World Cup. Verizon, American Express and NextEra Energy beat earnings estimates but missed revenue expectations.
