Starship's Heat Shield Looked Great After Flight 13, But Experts Spotted Something Troubling - Gizmodo

Gizmodo reported that SpaceX’s Starship Version 3 completed a broadly successful Flight 13 test on July 24, 2026, with the vehicle splashing down in the Indian Ocean after demonstrating several objectives. The flight included deployment of SpaceX’s next-generation Starlink satellites, and SpaceX said the heat shield remained intact after reentry. Images from recent flights also showed a visibly more uniform thermal protection system than earlier Starship tests, suggesting progress in tile design and attachment.

The concern, according to Gizmodo’s account of expert analysis first reported by Ars Technica, is that the shield may still fall short of what SpaceX needs for rapid reuse. Former NASA heat-shield specialist Dan Rasky, former NASA astronaut Charles Camarda and space policy figure Charles Miller reviewed post-splashdown imagery and pointed to white streaking near tile boundaries. They said those marks could indicate hot gas intrusion between tiles, while other signs suggested cracked tiles or damaged edges.

Gizmodo emphasized that the heat shield worked for this test, but the issue matters because SpaceX’s long-term goal is to refly Starship and its booster quickly, potentially within hours. A shield that survives reentry but requires extensive inspection or repairs would be a major limitation for that business and exploration model. The article noted that SpaceX has been experimenting with tile placement, attachment methods and stress tests, including gathering heat-shield imagery from Starlinks released during Flight 13.

The experts cited in the report argued that SpaceX may ultimately need a different thermal-protection approach rather than continued refinement of a tile-based system similar in principle to the Space Shuttle’s. Gizmodo noted, however, that SpaceX has not publicly indicated plans to change direction at this stage.
