Starlink eases Libra School’s internet connectivity woes

What the report says
Libra International School in Zirobwe, Luweero district, has adopted Starlink satellite internet to address long-running connectivity problems that had disrupted digital learning, online research and communication with parents, according to The Observer. The school’s leadership said its location outside Uganda’s main urban centres made it difficult to secure a stable connection, and earlier attempts such as signal boosters did not provide adequate service despite the expense.
The development came through MTN Uganda, which has introduced Starlink for Business for institutions and companies in remote or underserved areas. The service was showcased at Libra School during the launch, with MTN saying it aims to help organisations that face weak mobile coverage or no fibre infrastructure. The company said it will act as an authorised reseller while also providing local support and account management.
William Sekabembe, the school’s director, said unreliable internet had made it harder to use technology in classrooms and administration. He said the new connection had improved access in computer labs, strengthened students’ ability to do research and made parent communication easier. The school also said its examination and management systems were running more smoothly.
The report places the school’s experience in a broader context of institutions beyond major towns seeking alternatives to terrestrial networks. Starlink uses low-Earth-orbit satellites, which can make internet access possible in places where extending fibre or tower-based services is costly or impractical.
