St Mary’s Assumpta Girls Students Honour Gen Moses Ali

Nile Post reports that students and staff at St. Mary’s Assumpta Girls Secondary School in Adjumani held a tribute for the late Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Ali, citing his support for girl-child education and the school’s development. The memorial took place on Tuesday, ahead of his scheduled burial on Wednesday in Adjumani District. The school, described as the only girls’ secondary school in the Ma’di Sub-region, lowered its flags and paused lessons as learners and teachers gathered for prayers and patriotic songs.

According to the report, headteacher Sister Rebecca Abiyo led the brief observance before students returned to class. She said the school, founded in 1978, has grown from a small intake to 712 learners, including Ugandans and refugee students from neighbouring countries. Nile Post says she credited Gen. Moses Ali with helping widen education opportunities for girls, including vulnerable learners and refugees.

Students quoted by Nile Post said they associated Moses Ali’s legacy with education, peace and support for refugees in the West Nile region. Learners including Norah Abio, Brenda Mazapkwe and Judith Muya Julise, a South Sudanese refugee, described him as a figure who promoted stability, coexistence and opportunities for disadvantaged girls.

The tribute came as mourners prepared for the former Second Deputy Prime Minister and long-serving Adjumani West MP’s burial. Nile Post reports that his body arrived at Openzinzi Airfield on Tuesday and was taken to his home in Abiricaku Village for a vigil. Funeral prayers were scheduled for Paridi Stadium before burial at Taqwa Mosque Cemetery in Abiricaku Village.
