St Johnstone crash out as Dundee Utd squeeze through - League Cup round-up

What the report says
BBC Sport reported that St Johnstone were eliminated from the Premier Sports Cup after East Fife scored a stoppage-time equaliser and then won the penalty shoot-out bonus point. St Johnstone had needed a victory to keep alive hopes of reaching the last 16 as one of the best runners-up, but instead finished third in Group F behind Inverness Caledonian Thistle and East Fife. Caley Thistle topped the section after Alfie Bavidge’s early penalty secured a win at Greenock Morton.
Dundee United advanced from Group B after Montrose missed the chance to qualify as group winners. Montrose needed only a draw at home to Spartans, but lost 2-0, with James Craigen and MacKenzie Ross scoring for the visitors. That result allowed United to go through, while Arbroath beat Stirling Albion in the group’s other fixture.
The BBC said Aberdeen, Ayr United, Kilmarnock, Ross County and Stenhousemuir also joined Dundee United and Inverness as confirmed group winners. Dundee and Partick Thistle progressed as two of the best runners-up, while the remaining group winner and final runners-up place were left to be settled on Sunday. St Mirren can win Group C by avoiding defeat against Dunfermline Athletic, but Dunfermline would be assured of qualification if they win.
Other notable results included Aberdeen beating Kelty Hearts with Kevin Nisbet scoring again, Ross County winning at Airdrieonians, Dundee overcoming Clyde, and Stenhousemuir edging Livingston after a goalless draw and shoot-out. The League Cup group stage determines the clubs moving into the knock-out rounds, making late goals and bonus-point shoot-outs decisive in several sections.
