Sserunjogi urges voters to elect capable Local Council I leaders regardless of party

Nile Post reported that Bukomansimbi South MP Hassan Mukiibi Sserunjogi has asked residents to focus on competence and service delivery when choosing Local Council I leaders, rather than voting strictly along party lines. The appeal was made during a community meeting in Kamaanda Village, Kibinge Sub-county, as Uganda prepares for forthcoming village-level elections.

According to the report, Sserunjogi said grassroots leaders should be assessed on their commitment and capacity to address local needs. He endorsed candidates in several villages, including Nyanja, an NRM candidate in Kamaanda, Mpinde, a NUP candidate in Makukuulu, and Mukoreya in Kalubaya, saying he believed they could work with him to improve services. The MP also urged voters to select leaders willing to cooperate with his office on government programmes and development priorities.

Residents at the meeting raised concerns including limited infrastructure and lack of electricity, with Kamaanda described by locals as one of the areas that has fallen behind in development. Sserunjogi pledged to continue lobbying for power extension to communities still outside the national grid, including Kamaanda. He also pointed to ongoing constituency projects, saying construction of Kisojjo Health Centre had started and electricity expansion to Kassebwera Parish was in progress.

The issue matters because LC I leaders are the closest formal government representatives to many communities and often play a role in mobilising residents, identifying local problems and linking villages to public programmes. Nile Post said the meeting was part of Sserunjogi’s constituency outreach to assess needs, monitor development priorities and encourage participation in the upcoming village leadership elections.
