Ssenyonyi Salutes Moses Ali, Urges Respect for Constitutional Order

Nile Post reports that Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi used a special parliamentary sitting in honour of the late Gen. Moses Ali to both pay tribute to the veteran politician and call for stronger adherence to Uganda’s constitutional protections. The sitting was attended by President Yoweri Museveni, who is also commander-in-chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces.

Ssenyonyi, a National Unity Platform leader, acknowledged that he and Ali belonged to opposing political traditions, noting Ali’s ties to the NRA and his long service in government. He said he had disagreed with Ali’s decision to keep contesting for office despite illness and advanced age, but still credited him for decades of public service. He framed Ali’s death as a reminder that political power is temporary and that officeholders should focus on the institutions and legacy they leave behind.

According to the report, Ssenyonyi appealed to Museveni to ensure that security agencies act within the law. He referred to constitutional requirements on arrest, detention in gazetted facilities and presentation before court within 48 hours, and criticized alleged abductions, prolonged detention and torture. Nile Post noted that opposition groups and human rights organizations have previously raised similar concerns, while authorities have maintained that security operations are lawful and necessary for national security.

Ssenyonyi also pointed to Ali’s decision to leave armed rebellion and integrate his forces into the national army as part of his contribution to unity. He extended condolences to Ali’s family, Adjumani residents, Muslim and Nubian communities, colleagues and Ugandans mourning the former minister, who held senior roles including deputy prime minister during a long public career.
