Sseggona Applauds Anti-Corruption Drive but Urges Caution

Former Busiro County East MP Medard Sseggona has welcomed Uganda’s renewed anti-corruption drive while urging government to ensure that enforcement stays within the law. Speaking on Sanyuka TV on Monday, he said the push against corruption is important, but it is too early to say the country is already moving in the right direction. He argued that efforts to punish wrongdoing should not override established legal procedures or weaken institutions meant to provide accountability.

According to Nile Post, Sseggona linked his comments to President Museveni’s “Kisanja No More Sleep” agenda, which has increased pressure on public officials and prompted more activity by anti-corruption bodies such as the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and the Inspectorate of Government. The broader campaign has focused on alleged misuse of public funds, job scams, and other cases involving local government and state institutions. Sseggona said that while executive agencies play a key role, Parliament must also remain central to oversight.

He praised parliamentary committees, including Public Accounts Committee and COSASE, as essential checks on public spending. Drawing on his experience in those roles, he warned that weakening committee scrutiny would set back the fight against corruption.
