What the report says

IGN reports that Square Enix producer-director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida addressed fan interest in remakes of older Final Fantasy titles during the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin on Sunday. In a 75-minute “Naoki’s Room” stage segment, Yoshida was joined by Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, for a discussion covering their work, the franchise’s future, and planned Final Fantasy 7-related content for Final Fantasy 14.

The remake topic arose after Hamaguchi described Final Fantasy 6 as a major personal influence and said his comments about the game often lead to speculation that he might remake it. Yoshida cautioned that fans should consider the scale involved, saying that Final Fantasy 6, 8 and 9 are large games and that remaking them in the style of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project would likely require four or five separate releases. Hamaguchi also pointed to the unusual commitment required from the Remake trilogy team, noting that keeping developers motivated across more than a decade was a major undertaking.

IGN notes that Yoshida’s remarks echo earlier comments from Final Fantasy 6 director Yoshinori Kitase, who said in 2024 that a comparable remake of that game could take around 20 years because of its breadth, content and cast. The comments matter because the success and visibility of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series have kept fan hopes alive for similar treatments of other entries.

The Berlin discussion also touched on Final Fantasy 14 crossover plans, including FF7-themed Golden Saucer content, Barret and Tifa-style outfits, and a raid titled Beyond the Lifestream planned for version 8.01. Hamaguchi reiterated that the FF7 remake trilogy was intended to introduce the 1997 game to newer players with expanded worldbuilding, lore and character depiction.
