What the report says

The Hollywood Reporter says Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, is tracking for a major box office launch as it opens in North America at the end of July 2026. Sony is estimating a $195 million domestic debut from about 4,300 theaters, a figure THR says aligns with outside tracking and would make it the biggest opening of the year so far.

If that forecast holds, the film would surpass “Toy Story 5,” which THR reports opened domestically to $159.6 million, and could enter the all-time top 10 for North American opening weekends. Sony is also projecting $270 million from overseas markets, including China, for a possible $465 million global start. THR notes that would be Sony’s second-largest launch after “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which began with $600.5 million worldwide in 2021.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and made by Sony and Marvel Studios, the film features Holland’s Peter Parker facing isolation from loved ones and a new threat. The cast also includes Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo. THR reports that “Brand New Day” accounted for 49 percent of weekend showtimes as of Wednesday, citing the Boxoffice Company, and had a 91 percent Rotten Tomatoes critics score at the time of publication.

The expected launch is significant because Hollywood has been debating whether audiences are tiring of superhero and franchise films after several recent underperformers. THR frames Spider-Man as a possible exception, citing analyst Shawn Robbins’ view that Holland’s run with Sony and Marvel has stayed fresh through timing, spectacle and character-driven storytelling.
