Speedball Summer to blend fashion and orchestra to celebrate Ugandan creativity

What the report says
The Observer reports that Ugandan fashion designer David Mulolo, widely known as Speedball, and artist Joshua Waiswa, who performs as Josh SB, will lead the first edition of Speedball Summer, a cultural showcase built around streetwear, music and local creative identity. The event is planned for August 1 at MoTIV in Bugolobi, Kampala.
According to the report, the showcase will pair a streetwear runway with a live orchestral performance, a format the organisers present as an alternative to conventional fashion presentations. Waiswa is associated with the Bar Symphony experience, and the collaboration is being framed as a meeting point between fashion and orchestral music.
Mulolo told The Observer that Speedball Summer is intended to respond to what he sees as a gap in Uganda’s creative scene, particularly by showing how young creatives can push standards through fashion campaigns, events and original content. He also argued that the bigger barrier for the sector is not only financing, but the level of ambition and urgency among creatives.
The collection for this year’s edition will carry the theme “Made in Uganda,” which the organisers say is meant to go beyond a production label and serve as a statement about Ugandan talent. The report places the event within wider conversations about the potential of Uganda’s creative industries to support cultural visibility, tourism and economic growth, although no attendance figures or commercial targets were provided.
