Speaker urges leaders to emulate Kaziimba’s integrity

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth Oboth has urged Ugandan leaders to follow the example of outgoing Church of Uganda Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu by practicing integrity, accountability and service-oriented leadership. According to Nile Post, Oboth made the remarks on Sunday at a farewell service for Kaziimba at St Peter’s Cathedral in Tororo, where he said public office should be treated as a trust held for the benefit of citizens, not as an opportunity for personal gain.

Oboth praised the Archbishop’s influence beyond the Church, saying his moral guidance had encouraged public officials to make difficult decisions in the public interest. He also pointed to Kaziimba’s leadership of Church of Uganda social programmes in education, health, livelihoods and peacebuilding as evidence of responsible stewardship. The Speaker further cited the Church’s payment of a Shs60 billion debt on Janani Luwum Church House as an example of accountability in managing resources.

Kaziimba, who has served as the ninth Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, used his farewell message to call for national unity and caution against political, religious and other divisions. He warned that internal conflict weakens the country and stressed fairness, persistence and resilience as important values for Ugandans.

The service in Tororo drew religious and political leaders from the Bukedi subregion, including Catholic Archbishop of Tororo Ecclesiastical Province Emmanuel Obbo. Nile Post said the event is part of Kaziimba’s nationwide farewell tour ahead of his expected handover next year.
