Speaker Oboth urges Kaziimba not to go silent after retirement

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth Oboth has urged Church of Uganda Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu to remain active in public life after retirement, saying Uganda will still need his counsel on peace, unity and accountable leadership. Nile Post reported that Oboth made the remarks on Sunday in Tororo during a farewell event for Kaziimba, who is expected to retire on August 15, 2027, when he reaches the mandatory age of 65.

The gathering drew hundreds of Christians from Bukedi Diocese, along with lawmakers and other dignitaries, to mark Kaziimba’s seven years of service to the church and the country. Oboth praised the archbishop for speaking out on issues affecting the nation and said moral guidance from religious leaders can help public officials make difficult decisions. He encouraged Kaziimba not to withdraw from national conversations after leaving office.

Kaziimba, in turn, warned about rising hatred and division in Uganda and called on citizens to reject violence and promote unity across tribal lines. His message was echoed by Archbishop Emmanuel Obbo of the Catholic Archdiocese of Tororo, who said religious leaders had helped restore peace in the area after past tensions. The farewell programme is set to continue in the Busoga subregion as Kaziimba completes his final year in office. The event highlights the continuing influence of faith leaders in public debate, especially on social cohesion and leadership ethics.
