Speaker Oboth, Kadaga Commit to Joining Forces on Kaliro’s Problems

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mackson Oboth-Oboth and First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga have pledged to work together on long-running problems facing Kaliro District, including gaps in health services, education, road infrastructure and disputes over government land. The commitment was made during a thanksgiving event at Nansolo Primary School in Kaliro District, hosted by Kaliro North West MP George Patrick Kasaja and attended by several Busoga leaders.

According to Nile Post, Kadaga used the gathering to press for action on roads that she said had deteriorated for years, including the Jinja-Kampala highway and another route linking Kamuli, Bugaya, Irundu, Buyende, Kaliro and Pallisa. She also raised concerns about political pressure previously faced by local leaders and pointed to the need for better planning on key public infrastructure. Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda separately told the Kaliro Resident District Commissioner to arrest officials allegedly involved in selling government land, while also urging households to improve food security and livelihoods.

Third Deputy Prime Minister Lukia Isanga Nakadama encouraged residents to work through their elected MPs, and said each constituency is expected to have a Health Centre IV, which she framed as important for Kaliro North West. Busoga Katikkiro Joseph Muvawala called on regional MPs to stay united, especially on proposed changes to the Sugar Bill and cane pricing. In response, Oboth said he would help convene a meeting of Busoga MPs to agree on priorities for each financial year, underscoring the wider push for coordinated regional advocacy.
