Speaker Oboth calls for 'factory reset' of Parliament

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth-Oboth has urged Uganda’s legislature to undergo what he described as a “factory reset,” saying Parliament should refocus on its constitutional role in legislation, oversight and representation. According to Nile Post, he made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with Kenneth Asiimwe, the chief editor of 52 Dimensions Magazine.

Oboth said Parliament needs to strengthen accountability, committee work and respect for other arms of government in order to rebuild public trust. He argued that lawmakers should rely on facts and evidence in debate and avoid drifting from their core responsibilities. The Speaker also said better discipline in how Parliament works could help restore what he called the House’s lost glory.

The meeting also centered on a commemorative magazine edition presented to Oboth, which highlights the contributions of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces to peace, professionalism and regional stability. The same edition also features the Uganda Childhood Cancer Foundation and its support for children with cancer.

Oboth praised the publication for documenting national service and humanitarian work, while Asiimwe said the magazine aims to profile leaders and institutions contributing to security, governance and social impact. The remarks come as Parliament faces continued public scrutiny over oversight, service delivery and the conduct of some legislators.
