Speaker Oboth Attends Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Malawi

Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Markson Oboth-Oboth, is in Lilongwe, Malawi, for the 55th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region Conference, according to Nile Post. The gathering brings together lawmakers from across the Commonwealth, including about 300 delegates from national and subnational legislatures in the CPA Africa Region, to examine how parliaments can respond to weakening public trust and improve inclusive governance.

The conference is taking place at the Bingu International Convention Centre under the theme “Renewing the Social Contract: Parliaments as Catalysts for Inclusive Growth and Citizen Trust.” Discussions are centered on rebuilding confidence in parliamentary institutions, strengthening legislative oversight, and making parliaments more transparent, accountable and responsive to citizens.

Nile Post reported that the broader CPA Africa Region includes 63 national and subnational legislatures and is guided by a Coordinating and Executive Committee. The meeting is also intended to give lawmakers a forum to share experiences and approaches for improving the relationship between citizens and their parliaments.
