Spanish football postpones 24 Copa del Rey games after train crash

What the report says
Spain’s national football federation postponed all 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday after a serious train crash in central Spain, according to Al Jazeera. The accident killed at least 30 people and left about 80 injured, with authorities warning that the death toll could still rise. The report said a high-speed train struck the back of another train that had already stopped on the track.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation said the postponement was a sign of solidarity with the victims and their families. It also said the broader Spanish football community stood with those affected and was available to assist authorities. The federation said it would announce a revised schedule later. Thursday’s first-round matches were still set to go ahead, and Al Jazeera noted that Spain’s top league had not yet announced any weekend changes.
Among the fixtures affected were Navalcarnero against Real Betis, Salamanca against Celta Vigo, and Tavernes against Valencia. Several clubs issued public messages of condolence. Barcelona said it supported the victims’ families and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while Real Madrid expressed sympathy for everyone affected. Sevilla FC also held a moment of silence and cancelled a scheduled media appearance before its match preparations.
The postponements came as Spanish football reacted to a national tragedy, with clubs and officials using matchday plans and public statements to show support while the investigation and rescue response continued.
