Variety reported that Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final delivered record U.S. television audiences. Citing Nielsen, the report said Fox averaged 38.937 million viewers for the Sunday, July 19 match, making it the biggest soccer audience ever recorded on U.S. English-language television and the most-watched World Cup final in the country.

Spanish-language coverage also set a high mark, according to Variety: Telemundo and Peacock drew 23.9 million viewers, described as the largest audience for a soccer match in Spanish-language U.S. TV history. Together, the English- and Spanish-language audiences reached 62.8 million. Fox viewership reportedly peaked at 51.685 million at 5:45 p.m., as Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute to give Spain the title and prevent Argentina from repeating as champion.

The figures far exceeded recent World Cup finals in the U.S. Variety said Fox’s final audience was up 132% from Argentina-France in 2022 and 240% from France-Croatia in 2018. The match also surpassed the previous U.S. English-language soccer TV record, the U.S. men’s national team’s 2014 World Cup loss to Belgium, which drew 33.089 million viewers.

Variety added that the broader tournament was also a ratings success: Fox, FS1 and Tubi averaged 7.74 million viewers across 104 matches, while Telemundo and Peacock averaged 6.3 million. The strong performance could affect future media-rights competition, with Variety noting reported interest from major streaming and sports media companies in the next World Cup rights cycle.
