CNN, carrying an Associated Press report, said a joint U.S.-Russian crew returned safely to Earth on Sunday after spending about eight months aboard the International Space Station. NASA astronaut Chris Williams and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergei Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev landed in the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft in a remote area of Kazakhstan near Zhezkazgan, also rendered in the report as Dzhezkazgan.

The spacecraft came down by parachute in a planned landing zone southeast of the Kazakh town. According to the report, the mission lasted 241 days. It was the first spaceflight for Williams and Mikaev, while Kud-Sverchkov was completing his second trip to space. NASA imagery showed the three crew members inside the capsule after landing.

The next step is a standard post-landing transfer: the crew is expected to be flown by helicopter to Karaganda. From there, Williams is due to travel onward to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, while Kud-Sverchkov and Mikaev are expected to return to the Russian cosmonaut training center in Star City, near Moscow.

The landing highlights the continuing operational partnership between the United States and Russia on the space station, despite wider political tensions following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The report also noted that a replacement crew arrived at the station on July 14 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, joining other U.S., European and Russian crew members as part of Expedition 75.
