What the report says

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has said he does not expect to return to club management in the Premier League. In comments reported by BBC Sport Football, the 56-year-old said he could not see a path back into that role after leaving the England job following Euro 2024, where England lost the final to Spain. Southgate also pointed to his long absence from club coaching, noting he last managed at Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2009.

BBC Sport reported that Southgate made the remarks on The Amol Rajan Connection. He said his relationship with football has changed and that, near the end of his England tenure, he no longer enjoyed the work in the same way. He has since spent time in media, taken part in a BBC documentary about challenges facing young men and boys, and lectured at Harvard Business School. He said he has enjoyed the variety of life away from the weekly pressures of management.

The interview also touched on Manchester City’s ongoing case over alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules. Southgate said the dispute is complicated and argued that there are no clear winners because any outcome could lead to further legal and sporting consequences. That wider context matters because it underlines how governance and disciplinary issues continue to shape the English game.
