South Korea plans to expand anti-piracy operations closer to Hormuz Strait

What the report says
South Korea is preparing to widen the reach of its Cheonghae naval unit, which has patrolled the Gulf of Aden since 2009, so it can operate closer to the Strait of Hormuz. According to Al Jazeera and Reuters, the defense ministry plans to ask parliament to extend the unit’s mandate beyond its current anti-piracy role off Somalia and into waters near Oman’s port of Duqm, putting it nearer to a key global shipping lane.
The proposal comes amid pressure from the United States for Seoul to contribute to security efforts linked to the conflict with Iran. South Korean officials said the expanded mission would remain noncombat, stay under South Korean command, and focus on protecting commercial shipping and South Korean interests. The ministry also said the deployment would be limited to open waters south of Oman and would not involve monitoring Iranian territory or territorial waters.
If approved, the change would increase the unit’s operating area and add personnel and equipment, including a bomb disposal team and a maritime patrol aircraft. The current Cheonghae contingent departed from Busan in October aboard a destroyer carrying about 300 service members. Yonhap reported the cabinet would review the request before it goes to lawmakers.
The move has drawn political criticism at home, with some opposition figures arguing it would amount to a de facto troop deployment and could risk entangling South Korea in the wider regional war. The issue highlights Seoul’s effort to balance ties with Washington, protection of maritime trade, and caution over direct involvement in Middle East hostilities.
