South African court pauses impeachment process against president

Al Jazeera, citing AFP and Reuters, reported that South Africa’s Western Cape High Court has temporarily stopped a parliamentary impeachment process against President Cyril Ramaphosa linked to the “Farmgate” scandal. The court granted an interim order on Friday, 24 July 2026, blocking an impeachment committee from moving ahead with public hearings while Ramaphosa pursues a legal challenge to a 2022 report that said he may have committed serious misconduct or constitutional violations.

The case stems from the discovery of foreign currency allegedly hidden in furniture at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in Limpopo province after a 2020 theft. Al Jazeera reported that Ramaphosa has denied wrongdoing and has said the $580,000 was income from buffalo sales. The controversy damaged him politically and, according to the report, nearly cost him the leadership of the African National Congress in late 2022.

Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said the president respected the court’s decision and would continue to cooperate with accountability processes while upholding judicial independence and separation of powers. The ruling gives Ramaphosa a temporary reprieve as he also awaits the outcome of a separate court challenge concerning the independent panel’s findings.

The matter remains politically significant because it tests accountability mechanisms around the presidency and comes after the ANC lost its parliamentary majority in the May 2024 election. Al Jazeera noted that analysts still expect Ramaphosa to remain in office if the process resumes, given continued ANC support and the party’s position as the largest force in a coalition government.
