What the report says

Residents of Tshikota, a township west of Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, are pressing South Africa’s health authorities to provide a local public clinic or regular mobile clinic service. According to Health-e, which was republished by AllAfrica, people in the community must travel to Louis Trichardt for public primary healthcare, a trip that can cost about R30 by taxi or take roughly an hour on foot. For many households, the alternative private clinic charge of R350 for a consultation and medication is out of reach.

The report highlights how transport barriers can become dangerous during emergencies or for patients with limited mobility. One resident, Dipou Moyo, described needing urgent hospital treatment after collapsing at night and said she would have struggled to get help without a relative’s car. Another resident said taking a child with mobility challenges to care in Louis Trichardt can require hiring transport at significant cost.

Community figures, including a local South African National Civic Organisation representative, say the existing public clinic in Louis Trichardt serves a large population and leads to long waits. They argue that Tshikota, which has more than 7,000 residents, needs a facility within walking distance. The report also notes that a private clinic opened in the township in 2024, but its fees limit access for unemployed and low-income residents.

Health-e said it asked the Limpopo Department of Health about possible plans for Tshikota, but had not received a response by publication. The story comes as provincial officials have discussed broader plans to improve health infrastructure and expand mobile clinic services, though no specific Tshikota commitment was mentioned in the budget speech cited by the report.
