South Africa: Tourism Growth Reflects Confidence in South Africa

What the report says
South Africa’s government is using Tourism Month to highlight a rebound in visitor numbers and to frame tourism as a signal of confidence in the country. In a SAnews.gov.za article carried by AllAfrica, Acting Government Communication and Information System director-general Nomonde Mnukwa said the sector supports businesses, livelihoods and local development across urban, rural and township communities.
The article cites Statistics South Africa and the Department of Tourism as saying the country received more than 5.58 million international tourists from January to June 2026, up 12.3% from the same period a year earlier. It says arrivals from the rest of Africa rose 14.3%, while overseas arrivals increased 5.6%. June 2026 arrivals were also reported at 823,365, up 9.8% year on year and above pre-pandemic June 2019 levels by 12.1%.
Mnukwa said the performance reflects South Africa’s appeal despite economic pressure, geopolitical uncertainty and shifting travel patterns. The article links the growth to government efforts, including a partnership between the tourism and public works departments to speed up tourism infrastructure investment, and the rollout of an Electronic Travel Authorisation system intended to simplify travel while maintaining border security.
The piece also argues that tourism growth depends on cooperation between government, business and communities, and that domestic tourism remains important. More broadly, it presents tourism as part of a wider effort to build confidence in South Africa as a destination for travel, investment and business.
